My Favorite Baby Quilts

A hand-made baby quilt is a special gift to receive and often becomes a cherished lovey. I think using organic materials in baby quilts is particularly important not only for the well-being of our environment, but also for the healthy of the baby. In the future, I will be using only organic fibers in baby quilts that I make. For more information about organic baby products and healthy choices for your baby, natural-organic-baby.com is a great resource.

I tend to make baby quilts with easy patterns so that they are strong and durable and can be used and loved and washed over and over. I don’t want to make anything so complicated that it becomes too delicate to be used.

I often have a couple of organic baby quilts for sale in my Etsy Shop, Be sure to check it out if you are looking for a handmade, organic baby gift. Below are photos of quilts I've made for neices, nephews and friends.

Crazy Eights Baby Quilt

Crazy Eight pattern baby quilt

Crazy Eights, by Bits 'n Pieces , is a pattern that you can use to make one quilt top with eight fat quarters. I used 30s reproduction prints to make this quilt for my best friend's baby boy.

Shining Star Quilt

This pattern, called Shining Star, is much easier then it looks because it is made with half-square triangles instead of diamonds which would require inset Y seams.

Textured Quilt

baby quilt with textured fabrics

You can make a quilt like this one without a pattern. What makes it fun and interesting for a baby is the different textures of the fabrics. Find scraps of fabrics in your stash that have various textures, perhaps some fake fur, some chenille, and something shiny and silky. Sew rectangle-shaped pieces together to make 3 or 4 rows and then sew the row together. Ta dah - you've got a great baby quilt!

Ragged Edge Quilt

This is a raggy edge or frayed edge quilt. This type of quilt is very easy to make because there is no quilt sandwich or quilting needed. You can find organic flannel fabrics online, so this would be an easy baby quilt to make "green". If you want to make one of these, try the free tutorial at "Love to Sew".

One Block Quilt

This is another super easy baby quilt and you don't need a pattern. Just pick a favorite large scale print for the center block and add coordinated borders. This one features animals doing ballet for the center print and was a gift for a baby girl.

Baby V's Vintage 30's quilt

Here is another simple pattern that makes up into a beautiful baby quilt - simple squares. I picked vintage 30's reproduction fabrics for this quilt made for my friends' 2nd child. This choice of fabric suites her nicely and makes the simple pattern very special looking. Instead of machine quilting it, I tied it using red embroidery floss. Also instead of binding it, I "birthed" it and used red rick rack around the edges. Baby V's family tell me that they love this blanket and use it all the time.
