Natural Color Cotton

Did you know that cotton naturally comes in different colors? I used to think it was all white, but that is not true. It can be be many different shades of white, green, tan, brown and grey. Using natural colored cotton means eliminating all of the toxic steps of the conventional dying process!

The striped fabric below was made without dyes, using only the natural color of the cotton fibers to created the pattern.

Striped fabric made with naturally green and cream colored cotton.

Natural color cotton has not been used very much in the past because availability was limited and the fibers were not as strong as the conventional farmed cotton. It is cheaper and “easier” to mass produce “white cotton” and then dye it to have all the colors and designs we want.

Recently, agriculturists have been able to selectively breed cotton plants to improve fiber strength and color intensity. More and more of these beautiful cottons are available in fabrics that we can quilt with! As an ecologist and conservationist, I think this is a great application of science and technology.
