Sources for Organic Quilt Fabric
In my quest to go green with my quilting, I have found just a few good sources to buy organically grown and/or naturally dyed cottons. I provide reviews of the stores I order from most frequently below and you can read about sources of green fabrics from other visitors to this site. Do you know any sources for organic cotton fabrics or other environmentally-friendly quilting fabrics? If so, I invite you to share the information with us. Don't keep it a secret! I believe that the more demand we quilters and crafter create for green fabrics, the more will be manufacture in the future.
Reviews of My Favorite Green Fabrics
Near Sea Naturals -
http://www.nearseanaturals.com/
Near Sea Naturals carries a large selection of organic fabrics. My favorites for quilting can be found in the section of woven fabrics. They carry several very soft natural color cottons, including the two shown here - a green stripe and a beautiful off-white texture.

As you are shopping in the woven fabrics, be sure to pay attention to the weight of the fabric. Some of these are very heavy, more like twills and denims, and might not be suitable for quilting.
Legacy Studio at JoAnn'sJust this weekend, I was at JoAnn's and found that they have a new line of quilting fabrics called "Legacy Studio" and included in this line are over a dozen different solid colors made with organic cotton and environmentally friendly dyes! Please go take a look at these fabrics. The cost of these was about $10-12 per yard and the quality is very nice. I'm so excited about this because I want green quilting to accessible to everyone. I hope that a lot of folks will buy these fabrics so that JoAnn's will continue to stock them. You can also purchase them
online from JoAnn's.
Harmony Art -
http://www.harmonyart.com/
Harmony Art offers beautiful prints featuring plants themes and solids in funky modern colors such as lime green, red, pink and blue. They have some sateens which are a nice weight for quilting, as well as flannels and heavier twills.

Nature's Palette collection from from Avlyn - available at equilter.com and others. I like to shop at equilter because they donate a portion of your purchase price to a charity that you choose.
These are solid colored cottons that are dyed with organic dyes. There are about 10 solid colors available. Because of the dying process, the colors are solid, but slightly variegated. These fabrics are a lovely weight for quilting and are some of my favorites.
Fabric and Art -
http://www.fabricandart.com
This is a lovely online store that is gradually switching their entire stock of fabrics, notions, and yarns to organic and sustainably-produced textiles. You can find some organic 100% cotton and also hemp and bamboo fabrics. I recently ordered several colors and types of fabric from Fabric and Art for a project I am working on. I ordered their “Oasis Canvas,” organic, eco-friendly dyed cotton in 3 colors. The solid colors are rich and beautiful. The fabric is slightly heavier than regular cotton quilting fabric, but still works nicely in a quilt. I also like the visual texture of these fabrics. These will become regular players in my environmentally friendly quilts. The price of these organic canvas fabrics is comparable to local quilt shop prices for traditional quilting cottons. I also ordered several colors of their 60% Cotton/ 40% bamboo blend sheeting. I love these fabrics! The fabric is very soft and drapes beautifully. This line of fabric comes in quite a few solid colors with a very “natural” feeling palette. Again, prices are like LQS prices. Andover Fabrics Vegetable Dyes Andover is now offering a chemical-free fabric group called "Vegetable Dyes". The fabrics are produced by local Indian artists using the kalamkari process, which is quite complex. The cotton is first bleached in the sun, the stamped by hand with designs using plant dyes and wooden blocks. Each color must be applied individually and between each color the fabric is treated with a natural fixant, rinsed, allowed to set for several days, and dipped in rice water. Visit the
Andover webiste
to see photos of these beautiful fabrics. I have only found a few stores that sell these prints online:
Strawberry Patches
ZandS Fabrics
Keepsake Quilting
Michael Miller Organics Michael Miller has a line of adorable natural dyed organic cotton, including some flannels and trims. You can see their entire collection at the
Michael Miller website.
Hancocks also carries this line:
Hancocks of Paducah
Organic Fabric on eBay
You can often find organic cotton fabric on eBay. I have had good luck finding different prints than are currently available in the stores listed above. Here are a few relevant auctions to get you started.
Do you know a great source for organic quilting fabric?
As you may have experienced, it is difficult to find quilting fabrics that are "green". If you know of a good source that I haven't reviewed yet, please share it using the form below. I will put it on a web page for other quilters to access and credit you with the information. My hope is that organic fabric will be easier to find in the future as more and more green quilters create a demand for fabrics that are grown and produced in an environmentally friendly way. But in the meantime, let's help each other out by listing as many sources and varieties as we can find!
