Quilt Photo Gallery, 2008 - ?

This is my "Garden Quilt" made from a BOM presented by Debbie Mumm a couple of years ago. I'm very happy with how bright and cheerful this quilt turn out.

River at Dusk

This is my new original pattern, available free here on my website. This design reflects my love of nature and my southwest root. It was very fun to do the free motion quilting. It is made entirely with organic and sustainably grown cotton and bamboo fabrics and batting. It shows nicely that "green" quilts can be very colorful.

"Forever Green" - my entry for the Green Quilting Contest

A local quilt shop is sponsoring a green quilting contest. The requirements of the contest are that make a small quilt using the seven fabrics they provided, Dream Green batting, embellish with repurposed objects, use a repurposed object for the hangers, and communicate what you are doing to be greener. So here is my entry:

The triangle design in the center is the symbol for the neighborhood where I live, Civano, and is made with one of the fabrics provided. You’ll also see the fabric again in the four corners. Living in this neighborhood is a green choice – the houses are designed to be energy efficient; we water our drought tolerant landscape with reclaimed water; we have a solar powered water heater; and we can walk to school and most of our social activities, thus saving gas by driving less.

Around the Civano symbol is the recycling symbol made with the second fabric provided. My family recycles as much as we possibly can of our trash, and we rarely buy new clothes. Instead, we buy second hand. I also use fabric cut from old clothes in my quilting.

In the upper left corner, you see bamboo. The stem is made with the third fabric provided in the contest kit and the leaves are made from plastic net produce bags. This represents the bamboo fabrics and battings I use in my green quilting. Bamboo is a greener choice for quilters than cotton.

A water bottle, made from the fourth required fabric and embellished with a label from a real bottle, represents Dream Green batting made from recycled plastic bottles, a product that I use regularly.

In the lower left corner is a cotton plant, made using fabrics five and six along with several natural color cotton scraps. This represents the organically grown cotton I use in quilt tops and battings.

The last fabric that I was required to use is the black print that looks solid in the background. The borders of the quilt are made with non-bleached, organic cotton layered underneath a plastic grocery produce bag. I like the three dimensional effect and the pattern created by doing this. The binding of the quilt is made with a lightweight organic cotton canvas. The two hangers at the top are reused handles from a 20 pound bag of rice and you’ll also see a flower embellishment in the lower right corner made from soda can openers and the top of a lead wine bottle sealer.

This darling wall hanging is the result of my participation in my local quilt shop's 1st Saturday club this year.
