Joanna's Quilt Photo Gallery

I think it is fun to see how a quilter's work has evolved and changed over time, so I've presented this quilt photo gallery in approximate chronological order. I've also broken it up into several pages to keep downloading times reasonable!

1995-2002 My First Quilts

The first quilt I made was made cross-stitched blocks of herbs set in simple square blocks. Unfortunately, I didn't even know enough to keep photographs of my work, so I can't show it to you.

Sometime around 1995 or so, I finished graduate school and my mother gave me two books about quilting because she knew I was interested in learning how to quilt. I devoured these books and my next project was my "Shelby Quilt".

I would not recommend doing a portrait quilt like this as your second quilting project because it was quite difficult for me at the time. However the pattern's instructions were very good, so I was able to successfully make the portrait of my dog Shelby from way too many 1.5" blocks

My next quilt is the one that truly got me addicted to quilting. While waiting to adopt our baby daughter from China, I collected fabric scraps from many friends and family members and made her a quilt of good wishes to welcome her home. I still love this quilt and eight years later, she still sleeps under it every night.

I was able to learn quite a bit about quilting from reading books, but I decided to take an applique class to learn that technique. Here is the first quilt I made with applique blocks. The pattern is called "Bear Tracks" and it was a gift for my newborn nephew.

I took another class that year on ragged edge quilts and ended up with two quilts made with that technique. My class project was a baby quilt for a friend's baby girl:

This is my other ragged edge quilt, Denim and Moose, which is a great, cozy throw blanket that we still use.
